A San Juan Bautista man is set to spend three years in state prison for stealing a tip jar containing $3 at the Togo’s sandwich shop in Hollister and demanding a customer’s wallet.

Rion Redko, 21, pleaded guilty Friday to charges in relation to the June 13 theft at the Togo’s in the 1700 block of Airline Highway.

After buying and eating a sandwich at the restaurant, Redko took the jar with $3 inside and demanded a woman’s wallet twice before fleeing, according to witness reports. Redko threatened that he would shoot the woman if she didn’t give him the wallet, authorities alleged. When she declined to hand it over, he ran off.

Deputies from the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office arrested the San Juan man later that day after workers at the Togo’s confirmed his identity.

On Friday, he pleaded guilty to one of the related counts with special circumstances enhancing the penalty. In the same proceeding, visiting Judge Robert O’Ferrell sentenced him to three years in state prison, while Redko was credited with 91 days of time served in jail. When arrested, he had been on parole for another, unrelated crime.
