Local road closes permanently
A road at the north end of Hollister is being closed permanently, but the impact on residents and businesses should be minor, according to COG representatives.
Chappell Road, the road being closed, connects Santa Ana to San Felipe, which is the same general path that the bypass will occupy. The closure took place Thursday, June 21.
Mary Dinkuhn, Transportation Planning Manager for San Benito County explained that traffic studies had determined that closing the road would not have a significant impact on residents.
Residents and businesses at the north end of Chappell Road should not be inconvenienced, since the bypass project stops short of there, Dinkuhn said. Also the businesses located thereabouts still have access via San Felipe Road.
However, one business that is still sitting on the fence in terms of impact is the new AM/PM. The gas station located just south of Chappell Road along San Felipe sits directly next to the path of the bypass. It could be severely impacted should a proposed 14-foot retaining wall be installed.
The retaining wall has been proposed to protect the surrounding homes from the noises caused by the flow of traffic, Dinkuhn said. She added that she could not comment on how such a wall might impact the gas station.
The path of the bypass will come out directly next to the gas station, crossing the property behind and adjacent to the AM/PM.
“We opened on June 1 and obviously we want to keep our business visible,” said Sayed Faquiryan, the owner. “So a retaining wall could be a major issue. Our attorneys are working to keep our gas station visible.”
