There were a total of 168 San Benito County properties in some stage of foreclosure in April with 85 notices of default filed, a slight decrease from activity in the prior month and nearly equal to the numbers at the same time in 2008, according to figures released this week by RealtyTrac.

The number of default notices – the first stage of the process – dropped by five from March to April, while the number of properties in any stage of foreclosure declined by 22, according to the figures.

The numbers place San Benito County as having the 11th-worst per capita foreclosure rate, while the area has been ranked as low as second statewide on that list.

Statewide, there were 97,000 homes in foreclosure, a 10.4 percent drop from the prior month.
