For a group of runners at Sunnyslope School, the end of the year not only marks the finish line for classes, but it also means many of them will have to wait until August to continue running with the Sunnyslope Mileage Club.
The club finished its final run of the school year last week, which saw 14 of the 60 or 70 runners going over 100 miles during the course of the school year, said mileage club coordinator and resource teacher, Cindy Lubke.
For every lap runners completes, they get a ticket. Once they get 25 tickets, which is equivalent to five miles, they get a “plastic foot” award.
The students in the K-5 school run over their lunch period for 15 to 20 minutes during the week around the large field there. Lubke said she sets up cones so the kids know the boundaries.
While many runners eclipsed the 100-mile mark over the course of the year, second-grader Rafael Perez finished 100 miles in January and currently has around 130 miles logged.
“I already have (about) 32 feet,” he said. “I wanted to do more running but can’t … until next year.”
