After a sub-par performance resulted in a blowout loss to Salinas last week, the San Benito girls track and field team took it personal and took it out on Notre Dame in a 97-38 win Thursday.
“I told the girls it was time to redeem themselves,” coach Julio Trinidad said. “It was pretty much a whole team effort all the way. They were all bitter about the loss last week.”
Sophomore Courtney Allen paced the effort with wins in the 800, mile and two-mile. Laura Villasenor earned a solid with in the 400 meters with a time of 61.6, finishing just ahead of teammate Jessica Rux.
Freshman Sophie Coelho established herself as the ‘Balers top sprinter, winning the 100 meters in 13.2.
Senior Morgan O’Laughlin continued to dominate the discus competition, winning with a PR of 113-1 1/2.
But the most excitement of the night came in the pole vaulting competition. With players from San Benito, Palma and Notre Dame cheering him on, Josh Schroeder shattered the school record by clearing 15-9 1/4.
That bettered the mark of 15-6 that Todd Merrigan set last season.
“It was loud,” Trinidad said. “He was getting the crowd going.”
Despite Schroeder efforts, the Chieftains defeated San Benito in the boys competition.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
San Benito got its first winning streak of the season Thursday with a three-game sweep over Salinas.
The Haybalers overcome a bit of a lackluster start to earn a 25-17, 25-8, 25-19 victory, which came on the heels of Tuesday’s win over Palma.
“The first game they were not into it so we were making errors,” coach Luis Espinoza said. “In the second game I reamed into them. I told them this game is to prepare us for Monterey next week.”
The ‘Balers response was their best volleyball of the season in the lopsided second game victory.
“I pushed them a little bit and they answered,” Espinoza said.
Sterling Wilson led San Benito with nine kills and seven blocks. Chris Flippo contributed five kills, two blocks and two aces. Luis Rosales and Adrian Rodriguez shared the setter duties, with Rosales recording 10 assists and Rodriguez adding eight. David De La Cruz led the way with 10 digs.
“Overall, as a team effort it was pretty good,” Espinoza said.
