As part of a movement away from the traditional Ford Crown Victoria patrol cars, the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office has purchased and outfitted two Dodge Chargers as the local fleet gradually transfers over to the different model.

It is a necessary transition because the Ford Motor Co. will stop making the Crown Victorias in 2011 and the state’s new bid car for counties and cities throughout California is the Charger, Lt. Roy Iler said. The Dodge Chargers, he estimated, are running about $1,500 more each over the cost of the Crown Victoria vehicles.

Iler noted, however, how the Dodge Chargers “have a lot more power on the top end” and handle better than the Ford vehicles, while many of the other features are similar.

The office has a total of 13 patrol cars. Deputies share them from day shift to night shift, so they will not be assigned to specific officers.
