Hollister – A determined Mustang volleyball team almost caught San Benito sleeping in the third game Wednesday evening.

But San Benito was able to hold on to win 25-16, 25-12, 26-24.

“Our serve receiving was much better,” said Gilroy coach Sam Navarez, a ’71 San Benito grad. “Once we get the ball up, if the serve receiving is on, we can do pretty good. We played a good game. It was much better this time around. San Benito’s a good team.”

The Haybalers (20-4, 5-1 TCAL) dominated the first two games, but Gilroy came back in the third, matching San Benito point for point.

“The girls just stopped playing,” San Benito coach Jennifer Beall said. “We got to take everyone seriously. I think the girls were surprised by how tough they came out.”

Gilroy (11-16, 1-6 TCAL) was led by Amanda Link with 15 kills. And Kendall Costa had six blocks for the Mustangs.

“We started to get some good bounces,” Costa said. “We finally were able to get our rhythm down, and our timing was better. We didn’t want to go down like we did last time.”

Alyssa Fowles led the Balers with 13 kills, and Lesslie Schipper had seven. Schipper has four aces, and Chelsea and Alyssa Fowles each had two.

Alyssa Fowles had 10 digs, and Michelle Sanchez had eight.

“We just lost focus,” Schipper said. “It seems like we have a habbit of letting the other team get ahead before we come back. I know they blocked me a lot in the third game.”

Beall had to call a timeout after the Balers fell behind 21-18. After the timeout, San Benito rallied for five points behind the tough jump serving of Chelsea Fowles.

“We knew we had to put it together and get rid of the mistakes,” Fowles said.

The Balers will be playing in the Presentation tournament this weekend.

JV Note

The San Benito JV team (15-4, 3-3 TCAL) won 25-11, 18-25, 17-15 against Gilroy. Danielle Scibuola was 12 of 12 on hitting and had two aces. Ali Sharp had four kills and two blocks. Julianna Miller had five kills.
