Editor,

John Yewell is so puffed up about “Economic Darwinians” that he used the term five times in his tirade about evil Republicans seeking to undermine Social Security.

Maybe liberal Democrat Yewell doesn’t want to reveal the fact that when Social Security began in 1935, between 30 and 40 workers paid into the program to support each beneficiary. Today that figure has dropped to about two workers paying to support each retiree. There is no Social Security Trust Fund; there is only a pile of IOU’s, redeemable only by future additional taxes on following generations. Economists differ on when the crisis will confront us, but the system cannot survive with two workers paying benefits for each beneficiary.

Mr. Yewell’s “little tax increase” will not correct the structural imbalance of the Ponzi scheme that FDR’s Social Security has become. You can address the problem now, while there is time to make corrections, or you can stall till the disaster is on your doorstep. Perhaps, Mr. Yewell, that’s your definition of “Economic Darwinism.”

Sincerely, John C. Buchnan
