Fun’s the name of the game in South County
Just when you think things are going to start slowing down,
something else pops up to keep you moving. It was a busy week for
folks in South County, but, when isn’t it busy these days?

The Bitterwater 4-H Club members and many of their friends and family members spent last Monday in San Jose at the Raging Waters Waterpark. It was a great day as it started out a little overcast, which kept many people from even going to the park. That made for short lines and a lot of fun for all the 4-H’ers. By mid-afternoon, the sun came out and it turned out to be a beautiful day. Some of those spending the day there included the Hurley family, the Madson family, the Sans family, the Plunkett/Donovan family, Edwin and Lupe Mendoza, John and Katie Donham, Kassie O’Connor, the McFarland family, Maria and Clyde Becker, the Veysey family and guests, the Strohn family and the Bunch family.
Bill and Robin Rist and “Brushed Up Ministries” hosted another great Family Fun Day last Saturday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. They offered three free drawpot ropings, three barrel racing jackpots and boot races for the kids. The awards they gave out to five places in each event were wonderful. Christian Country singer Mike Hammock of Nacadoches, Texas gave a free concert after our free lunch. Everyone who attended agreed it was a great day and they are all looking forward to next year already. Some of those who attended included Casey, Colleen, Kenny and Vickie Sabin; Kenny and Valerie Reed; Hec and Twyster Hurley; Jeff Cabral and Jenna Lombardi; Andy, Wacey and Mattie Barrington; Don Lewis, Curtis Carrol, Dave Bunch, Fred and Caleb Raine, Mike and Paty Raine, Doylelynn and Pete Agee, Earl Escobar, the McFarland family, Alberta Rist, the Sans family and of course, hosts Bill and Robin Rist. Thanks Bill and Robin for another fun Family Fun Day.
It was nice to see Fred and Caleb Raine last weekend at the roping. Their family moved to Sulpher Springs, Texas last summer and they were here last week visiting family. I didn’t even recognize Caleb as he has grown so much over the last year.
The King City Riding Club hosted its monthly gymkhana last Sunday at the fairgrounds. Some of those participating included Chase and Clay Barbree, Tucker Bennett, Hannah Johnson, Tate and Morgan Kelly, Brooke and Mason Rianda, Dakota Stoughton, Cody Hood, Brody and Sierra Jo Sans, Ralphie Rianda, Blane and Blair Strohn, Cheyenne Rey, Alyssa Abercrombie, Curt and Bailey Nelson, Kelsee French, Megan Cheney and Jenna Lombardi.
Oh, I forgot, Jeff Cabral has now started competing too after his brilliant barrel racing performance the day before at the Family Fun Day. I forgot to ask him why he didn’t enter the goat-tying event though; that would have been good watching too! (Just giving you a bad time Jeff, I told you I’d write about you!)
The Strohn Family and Cheyenne Rey had a long weekend, too, as both families competed in Riverdale last Saturday at the Junior Christian Cowboys Association’s Junior Rodeo. They are quite the travelers, as they didn’t even get home before midnight on Saturday, then, got up, loaded up and headed to King City the next day for the Riding Club event. Whew, I’m glad that’s not me!
Pop Warner and high school football practices got underway this week in King City. Some of those playing from South County include Edwin Mendoza, Buddy Sans, Colton Stougthon, Ralphie Rianda and Rory Johnsen.
Haven’t heard any big buck stories yet, so, if you have one you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
