South County residents take home wins at SBC Fair horse show and
rodeos
Whew, is it hot or what? I knew Indian summer was upon us but
this is a little ridiculous. With the San Benito County Fair
officially under way, this hot weather could cause problems for the
fair animals and fair attendance. I hope it cools down soon.

Whew, is it hot or what? I knew Indian summer was upon us but this is a little ridiculous. With the San Benito County Fair officially under way, this hot weather could cause problems for the fair animals and fair attendance. I hope it cools down soon.

The fair unofficially kicked off last weekend with the horse show, junior rodeo and ranch rodeo. It was warm all three days but everyone managed to survive the heat OK. Congratulations to Jake Bourdet for winning the 8 & Under All Around Cowboy title for which he took home a brand new saddle. His sister Lacey had a good weekend, too, as she won the junior team roping with partner Blair Brown and then won the junior calf branding the next day with Dawson Bell. The Bourdets were tough last weekend! Kristy Melton won the 13-17 All-Around Cowgirl saddle while Blaine Strohn won the boys’ saddle. Sierra Stelling was the 8 & under girls’ winner. Some of those competing from our area included Sierra and Brody Sans, Taylor, Twyster and Tatum Hurley, Dawson Bell and Wacey Barrington. All the kids did well and each came home with some very nice awards.

Another big congratulations goes out to Lila Bell who spent last weekend down in Parkfield competing at the final West Coast Junior Rodeo Association rodeo of the year. Lila won the year-end All-Around Cowgirl title and she brought home the most beautiful trophy saddle I have ever seen. The saddle was hand made by saddle maker Tom Block and is one that she will be very proud of and able to use for many years. Way to go, Lila!

Eric Isaacson was the big winner at the ranch rodeo on Sunday as he was named the open all around champion while Allison Grantham squeaked by Lacy Bourdet by one point to win the ladies all around. Congrats to everyone on a fun, successful weekend

Besides rodeos keeping us busy, Buddy has been keeping us busy with high school football. I have to brag on him a little bit as he had a 200-yard rushing game two weeks ago, followed by a four-touchdown game last Friday night. Between rodeos and football, our kids are keeping us on the run!

Speaking of football, my fantasy team took a major dive last weekend. Jay Cutler is finally starting to show his true colors with his interceptions. My running backs stunk and so did my receivers. I lost my first match up of the season and dropped from first to fourth in the league standings. Looks like I’ll have to make a few changes this week.

Many birthdays and anniversaries are being celebrated this week. Kasey Hurley and Rob Regan both celebrated their birthdays on Sept. 27 while Stacey Bacon Schmidt celebrated hers on Sept. 28. Brendon Clark celebrated his birthday on Sept. 24 while earning a big win in Virginia at a PBR event. Todd and I, along with Greg and Carolyn Renz celebrated our wedding anniversaries on the Sept. 26. It’s been a busy week of celebrations in South County!

Enjoy the fair this weekend and try to stay cool. Don’t forget about the San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association Fall Luncheon and Fashion Show on Oct. 10, and if you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
