Things are shaping up in South County
Looks like it’s going to be another nice week in Bitterwater.
The warm weather should really help the grass grow this week. Let’s
just hope there’s another wet weather system out there somewhere in
the very near future!
Basketball season is in full swing in South County these days.
Between high school basketball and the Bitterwater Badger’s Boys
and Girls teams, everyone has someone to root for these days! The
Bitterwater Badgers opened up their season last Saturday in
Gonzales and was it ever an exciting season opener for both the
boys and the girls’ teams.

Being such a small school with such small teams, we are always most definitely the underdogs, but, that’s what makes our teams tough too! Each of our teams are only playing with six (yes, I said six) players. That leaves only one substitute for the entire game. Our kids really wear themselves out. Now that is why they do so much running in practice! The boys’ game was one of the most exciting games I’ve ever seen. Gonzales fielded a team of 16 players against our six and our boys stayed tough the whole time. The game went back and forth the whole game with Gonzales shooting a basketball to tie the game at 27 with about eight seconds to go. We were not looking forward to overtime as our boys were already wore out, so, with only 5 seconds left in the game, Todd Sans Jr. threw the ball from half court and made the perfect swish to win the game at the buzzer!
You would have thought we just won the Super Bowl! Everyone, including Gonzales was amazed. Congratulations to Tamra Barrington on her first win in the history of boys basketball at Bitterwater, and to the entire boys team for playing such an outstanding game, it was fantastic! Our girls had a great game going on against Gonzales at the same time the boys played. The girls held their own with the six players they were working with as well but unfortunately came up one point short to take their first loss of the season. Lisa Hearne is coaching the girls team this year and I’m sure she will have lots of wins under her belt before the season is over. The Badgers will play this week against San Antonio and Soledad. Go Badgers!
The King City High Lady Broncos are on a roll as they won both of their games last week, first against Gonzales, then at home against Santa Catalina. Congratulations to Kylee Owens on such a hot game against Santa Catalina as she scored the team high of 11 points. The Lady Mustangs played got the win against Gonzales but had a tough time against Catalina. Talk about tall girls, one of Catalina’s players was as tall as a tree at 6’3″. This week the ladies will play in three games, one at home and two away. Good luck KCHS!
Paul and Willene Wattis took advantage of the nice weather last weekend and branded some calves at their place. Some of those helping out and enjoying a delicious feast from the South County area included Alex and Stacey Schmidt and Vern and Jo Ann Scattini.
NFL football season is winding down with a huge disappointment for all Dallas Cowboy fans. It was awfully noisy around here last Sunday afternoon after that big loss to the dreaded Giants. Now it leaves me in a dilemma on who to root for. I want the Patriots to go all the way with a perfect season, but, Bret Favre is such a legend I want him to win it too. I guess we’ll have to wait and see, they both have to make it to the Super bowl first!
Have a great week, enjoy the warm sunshine and nice weather, but, let’s hope for some more rain next week! If you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at
