Life is very good in South County
It was a busy week out here in Bitterwater last week; seems lots
of folks had places to go and things to do. The weather was
beautiful and the grass is growing. What more can we ask for? How
about just a little shot of rain now and then to keep the grass
growing!
Birthday wishes go out to one of Bitterwater’s finest, Jean
Schmidt. Jean celebrated her 80th birthday Feb. 12, but she was
completely surprised by a huge (approximately 125 guests) surprise
party last Saturday at Tully Hall. The party was hosted by her
kids, Steve, Shari and Sue with some help from Donna Hansen.

It was a busy week out here in Bitterwater last week; seems lots of folks had places to go and things to do. The weather was beautiful and the grass is growing. What more can we ask for? How about just a little shot of rain now and then to keep the grass growing!

Birthday wishes go out to one of Bitterwater’s finest, Jean Schmidt. Jean celebrated her 80th birthday Feb. 12, but she was completely surprised by a huge (approximately 125 guests) surprise party last Saturday at Tully Hall. The party was hosted by her kids, Steve, Shari and Sue with some help from Donna Hansen.

Cynnie O’Connor catered the party and a delicious lunch was served followed by lots of cake. Some of those on hand to help Jean celebrate included her sister from Oregon, Bob and Betty Schmidt and Maggie, Ruth Records and Roberta Oswald, Donna Lisk, Johnny Joe and Darlene Maggini, Denise and Katie Donham, Susan Nino, Kuulei Flores, Laurence and Donna Hansen, Jim Smith, the Brewen Family, the Johnsen Family, the Sans Family, Vern and Joann Scattini, Nessen Schmidt and Val Bassetti and Bill, Robin and Roberta Rist, just to name a few. It was a beautiful day and a beautiful party, for a very beautiful lady. Happy Birthday Aunt Jean, here’s wishing you many, many more!

Congratulations go out to Sami O’Connor who just completed her second semester at Hartnell College and received all A’s and one B on her report card. Sami is studying to be a registered nurse and with grades like that, she’ll be well on her way.

Congratulations also go out to Bitterwater Tully School graduate Natalie Madson for recently breaking the record for the highest scoring freshman in ladies basketball at King City High School. And, guess whose record she broke? Her sister Caroline, who held the record from her freshman year, two years ago! Way to go Nat!

Mike and Mary Anne Mallory branded a few calves at their place last Saturday. Some of those helping out included: Allen Wallace, John and Johnny Nino, Todd Utterback, Shawn Smith, Dave Rigoli and me, Todd and the kids.

J.D. and Denise Donham hosted a houseful of guests last weekend. Their friend, former San Diego Padre player, Tommy LaVasseur and several of his friends came for the weekend. Many of the guests were restaurant owners so they served up a meal made for a queen last Friday evening. Denise said she didn’t have to lift a finger and she ate some delicious dishes. Sounds like they had a great weekend!

Bitterwater Tully School students are raffling off a cord of wood, delivered, to benefit the eighth grade field trip this year. Tickets are $5 each and the drawing will be held the first week of March. For tickets contact any student or call the school.

The San Benito County Cattlewomen’s Association will be hosting a pedro party fundraiser at the Tres Pinos Church on Friday night, Feb. 22. The event begins at 6 p.m. There will be a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and refreshments. For more information, contact any Cattlewoman.

After reading my rain totals in last week’s column, Howard Strohn notified me of their rain totals for the month of January and the season so far. In January they had a total of 9.34 inches while receiving at total of 14.52 inches for the season. Howard said he needs a micrometer to measure the grass but there are some green patches out his way. We’ll keep our fingers crossed for more rain soon Howard. We all need it!

Hope you all have a great week, and don’t forget your Valentine this week! Be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected].
