Thanksgiving’s coming to South County

I hope you all had a nice three-day weekend and did something special for Veterans Day. It’s hard to believe that Thanksgiving is next week. The kids are already talking about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Guess that means Christmas and Santa are right around the corner.

Anniversary wishes go out to Gregg and Sami Jo Johnsen and to Vern and Jo Ann Scattini. Gregg and Sami celebrated on the 4th while Vern and Jo Ann celebrated on the 11th. Birthday wishes go out to Savannah Hoss and Kayla Plunkett who both celebrated last week as well.

The Bitterwater 4-H Club members are participating in the KSBW TV 8 Share Your Holiday campaign this year. The club will be collecting any new children’s coats or warm blankets that they will donate to the Salvation Army on Friday, December 7th. The kids are scheduled to appear on camera that day donating all the coats and blankets they have collected. If you would like to help the kids with their donation, you can get in touch with any 4-H member or leave your item at Bitterwater Tully School.

The Salinas Valley Fairgrounds was the host of the State 4-H Equine Day last Saturday in King City. There were over 300 participants on hand from throughout the state taking part in all sorts of different horse related seminars. Hec Hurley did a horsehoeing demonstration as well as organizing the tri-tip barbecue luncheon that Bitterwater 4-H members served to all of the participants.

If anyone needs help getting into the Christmas spirit, Bitterwater Tully School students are in the midst of their See’s Christmas Candy fund-raiser and Christmas tree raffle. The fund-raisers will be going on through the end of November so if you’re in need of some candy or would like a chance to win a live Christmas tree from Bourdet’s Christmas Tree Farm in Hollister, be sure to get in touch with any Bitterwater student.

Jefferson School will be hosting a community potluck and Native American storytelling dinner this Friday at Jefferson School. The Salinas Valley Fair Ranch Rodeo will take place this Saturday at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. The day begins at 9 a.m. and should last throughout the day.

Sure hope you all remembered to set your clocks back last weekend; it sure is nice putting the kids on the bus in the daylight again! I guess I can’t say I’m tired of these long, hot days anymore, now I can just say I’m tired of these short, hot days. We must be having a long Indian summer this year, I sure wish it would start to cool down some. Let’s all just hope and pray that it’s a long, wet winter this year, we are sure in need of a good soaker these days.

Bitterwater Tully School students celebrated Halloween last week with a party at Tully Hall that was hosted by Traci Eggleston. There were lots of kids on hand in scary costumes to collect all the candy that was there. Some of those community members stopping by to enjoy the evening included Laurence and Donna Hansen, Jim and Betty Barrington and Donna Olivera. As usual, a good time was had by all.

Congratulations to the King City High School Volleyball teams on such a successful year. The junior varsity team, coached by Debbie Hudson, ended the season with a 14-0 record while the varsity team, coached by Wendy Davis, ended up with a record of 11-3. The varsity girls earned themselves a spot in the playoffs and will play their first game Wednesday night at the King City High School gym. The game begins at 7 p.m. so be sure to go watch and support the Lady Mustangs. Get well wishes go out to Carolyn Madson who will have to miss the playoffs and some of the basketball season with a knee injury that she suffered at the last league game in Gonzales last week. If you just can’t get enough of King City High School sports, the annual Powder-puff football game will take place this Thursday night at the stadium starting at 6:30 p.m. and the final Mustang football game of the year will take place on Friday in Gonzales.

Congratulations also go out to my parents who headed down to Ventura last week for the WAVE Television awards program. Their Christian Country TV program that airs on PBS was nominated for Most Inspirational Religious Program along with 75 other programs and they won! They were very surprised and excited. Congratulations Mom and Dad!

In case you haven’t already heard, there was a celebrity in King City a few weeks ago. Barry Bonds was seen enjoying dinner at The Grill Restaurant one evening with friends Tom and Wendy Willoughby. Seems Barry met up with Tom and Blake Willoughby for a pig hunt earlier in the day and enjoyed dinner in town later that evening. It caused quite a stir in little old King City. Blake and Wendy both said what a nice guy he was and how they really enjoyed his company.

Have you been in any stores lately? Seems everyone forgot about Thanksgiving and has gone straight to Christmas! It’s already that time of year. Students from Bitterwater Tully School are selling tickets for their annual Christmas Tree raffle again this year. Once again, John and Tina Bourdet from Bourdet’s Christmas Tree Farm in Hollister have graciously donated fresh cut Christmas trees to the schools as a fund-raiser. The tree farm opens Thanksgiving weekend so be sure to purchase your raffle tickets from any Bitterwater or Jefferson School student. It is a great place to get a tree and a great way to help support your local schools.

Have a great weekend, pray for a wet, rainy Thanksgiving and be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
