Singing the blue sky blues
Well, here we are, the middle of January and where oh where has
the rain gone? The little tinge of green that some folks were
seeing on their hillsides and in their pastures is fading fast.
And, it is just plain warm out here in Bitterwater. I like warm
weather, but not in January! We better get some rain fast or it’s
going to be a long year in these parts.

Believe it or not, it’s time to start thinking about the Salinas Valley Fair already. The annual Miss Salinas Valley Fair contest, coordinated by Marianne Madson, will take place on Saturday, April 4, at the fairgrounds in King City. The contest is open to young ladies in their junior or senior year of high school who live in Monterey County. Not only is the contest a great opportunity to represent the fair, but the winner also receives a $1,000 scholarship as well as many other great awards. For more information on the contest, contact either Marianne Madson or the Salinas Valley Fair office.

The Lady Mustang Basketball team is off to a great start for their league title. Last week they handily defeated the Pacific Grove Breakers and the Gonzales Spartans. This week the ladies will take on Catalina on Wednesday, and will host Greenfield at home of Friday night. Caroline Madson is ranking among the top players in the county in just about every statistical category while Mattie Barrington is ranked high in the steals and assists category. They are both so fun to watch as Caroline is a very quite but strong player while Mattie “Mad Dog” Barrington is a very fast, aggressive player that is an outstanding ball handler. I love to watch Mattie dribble down the court and outrun everyone on the opposing team. I’ll definitely miss watching Mattie play next year as this is her senior year. She’s been giving Sierra Jo quite a few tips on playing and has even given Sierra a nickname of her own. Mattie calls Sierra “Pit Bull” as at times Sierra can get a little too aggressive on the court and even fouled out the other night against Gonzales. It was a packed gym last Friday night as many locals took in the action against Gonzales. Some of those heading to town to support the Lady Mustangs included Robin Rist, Jim and Betty Barrington, Jeff and Jean Schmidt, Ed Copley and Stan and Arlene Dedini.

Hooray! The Chalone Peaks basketball program will continue this year! The players spent their holidays collecting donations to help pay for the program, as well as scheduling a sausage barbecue to help defray the costs. The barbecue will take place on Super Bowl Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Safeway parking lot. You can pick up your sausage sandwich and purchase a baked good before taking in the Super bowl. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from any Chalone Peaks basketball player.

Mike and Mary Ann Mallory branded their calves last Saturday, it was a beautiful day for a branding and they had a nice barbecue after.

Hope you have a great week, and be sure to give me a call or email me at [email protected] with any news you’d like to share.
