The hot August nights of summer are now upon us. Hope you’re all enjoying your summer so far. Not too much longer and the kids will be back in school. Many kids are getting ready for the San Benito County Fair, which is coming up in a few months, while others are busy preparing for the Monterey County Fair which begins next week.

Many South County residents spent some time down in Paso Robles recently taking in the mid state fair. Congratulations to Taylor Jo Hurley for winning the All-Around award at the county gymkhana last Friday at the fair, and to J.W. Brewen and Blake Willoughby for winning the Double Mugging at the country rodeo.

The Barrington Family just arrived back home from a week long trip to Idaho to visit family and friends. On their way back, they stopped off at the Butte Community College near Chico to attend the college orientation for Mattie. Mattie begins school there in the latter part of August.

Several South County kids are now officially licensed hunters. Tim Maxwell hosted a hunter safety course in Bitterwater last Saturday where eight kids participated in the class. All eight of them passed the class successfully. Those participating included: Wacey Barrington, Kassie O’Connor, Sierra, Buddy and Brody Sans, Natalie Madson, Emily Brewen and Troy Akers. Congratulations and good luck to all of you this year looking for your first big buck!

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association will be holding its annual roping and ranch rodeo the weekend of August 22-23. Entries closed on Aug. 12.

Keep your eyes to the sky this weekend as the Salinas International Air Show will be taking place all weekend long. The Navy’s Blue Angels have been making a few practice runs in our area the past few days so we’ve been seeing quite a bit of action already.
