Bringing a different look – while maintaining the focus on local sports in Hollister and San Benito County – is new Free Lance sports editor Nathan Mixter’s goal.
Mixter, 25, grew up in Hollister. He was promoted this week from the twice-weekly Morgan Hill Times, where he was also the sports editor. Both publications are part of South Valley Newspapers.
“I’m kind of returning to my roots,” he said.
After graduating from Calvary Christian School in 1997, Mixter attended Bob Jones University, a private college in South Carolina.
During college he spent some of his summer vacations in Hollister, working as a stringer for the Free Lance. He covered sports and news in San Benito County, helping where ever he could, he said.
Graduation netted him a bachelor’s degree in publishing and led him home to California, where like most college grads he found himself unsure of what he wanted to do with his degree.
“I thought about doing technical writing and web designing, and then I saw an opening at the Morgan Hill Times,” he said.
He applied for the sports editor position in Morgan Hill and was accepted.
“It’s a loss for us and a gain for the Hollister community,” said Walt Glines, Executive Editor of the Morgan Hill Times. “He’ll be tough to replace.”
During his two and a half years at the Times he did an excellent job covering prep sports as well as community sports, Glines said.
Mike Fitzgerald, Executive Editor of the Free Lance, called Mixter’s arrival “a great hometown success story.”
“He did a terrific job in Morgan Hill and I’m sure his talent and energy, along with his local knowledge, will improve our sports section dramatically.”
Sports has been a lifelong passion with Mixter.
“It seems like I’ve been covering sports, playing sports or watching sports pretty much my whole life,” he said. “It’s all I do.”
