Editor,
Why are we having this special election? Most propositions on the ballot are there because the governor couldn’t convince the legislature to vote his way. This election will cost the taxpayers about $50 million, but will these measures really reform the government? No!
We need to improve public schools, but will Prop. 74, extending tenure for five years improve student learning? No! I taught at San Benito High School for 35 years and served as division chair for over 15 years. First and second year teachers were observed almost weekly so there was ample time to ascertain their teaching ability. Several excellent first and second year teachers were not rehired because they clashed with one of the administrators. Teachers who do not have tenure were advised to keep a low profile: don’t become involved in union activities, don’t write too many misconduct reports on students, don’t flunk too many students and don’t ask questions at faculty meetings. Is this how they prove to be “good” teachers? No!
Prop. 75 unfairly targets teachers, nurses, firefighters, police and other public employees, but does not apply to other “special interest” groups who contribute to Arnold’s campaign. Union members are already allowed to opt out for political contributions.
Prop. 76 should be titled “Cut Education Funding Act.” This measure would cut $4 billion from schools and the $2 billion he “borrowed” from education would never have to be paid back. Look at our local schools. Does Hollister Elementary have surplus money? Why hasn’t the High School District given teachers a pay raise for four years? Do you want Arnold to have extensive new budgeting powers? No!
Prop. 77 give too much power to three retired judges and it is to go into effect before our June Primary election. Yes, redistricting has not been done fairly, but this is not the answer. Even the League of Women Voters has called this measure a “harmful, misguided attempt to achieve reform.” Why does Arnold want this to pass? If he wins reelection next year, he hopes to have a more cooperative legislature to work with. Stop Arnold!
Prop. 78 is sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry; no more needs to be said. Prop. 79 is sponsored by consumer, senior and health organization. It is a step in the right direction to reduce the cost of prescriptions.
Prop. 80 is a common-sense consumer initiative to help prevent energy blackouts and fraud by unregulated private energy producers like Enron. If you want more affordable energy, vote yes.
