After being open to the public for six weeks, the pool will once again be closed to prepare for the start of the school year.

Leroy Dozal and his 2-year-old son, Mateo, were too busy having fun Wednesday afternoon to contemplate the end of summer. Mateo loves jumping in the pool, splashing around, climbing out and then doing it all over again.

“He loves the water,” Dozal said. “And it’s good for him to burn some energy here.”

Dozal went swimming at the high school pool as a child. Watching his son play in the water brings back a lot of memories.

“We came here as often as we could this summer,” Dozal said.

He wasn’t alone. Between 90 to 100 people came to the pool each day during the summer, said Dean Wilkins, the city Recreation Department’s aquatics coordinator.

Every day the pool was open this summer, Rebecca Alfonso was there with two dozen children from the Chamberlain’s Children Center in Hollister.

“They look forward to it every day – it’s great,” Alfonso said Wednesday. “It’s a great way to release some energy and have fun.”

The kids love jumping off the diving board, she said. And no matter how many times they jump, they want to do it at least once more.

Wednesday marked Danelle Silveira’s first visit to the pool this summer. The 23-year-old Hollister resident brought her siblings and cousins out for some summer fun

“This is our first time this summer, but it won’t be the last,” she said.
