No smoking within 20 feet of public buildings ordinance.

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter in support of the new “No smoking within 20 feet of public buildings ordinance.”

Before this law was passed, I would step out of my workplace only to be greeted by the smell of smoke. The smoke then would linger into the waiting room either through the doorway or windows, which I believe defeats the purpose of no smoking in the workplace.

This law protects my fellow colleagues and me from the exposure to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke has been known to cause 4,700 deaths annually in California, as well as being responsible for some forms of asthma, eye irritation and respiratory problems in nonsmokers.

Now we can go to work knowing that we are not breathing in someone else’s harmful fumes.
