The continuing state budget woes have prompted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to order a third furlough day for most state government offices, affecting services such as those offered at the Hollister branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Sally Street DMV as well as others around the state will be closed today, next Friday and Aug. 7, 14 and 21. Three Friday closures per month are scheduled through June 2010 as a way to save the cash-strapped state money.

All state prisons, hospitals, the California Highway Patrol and CalFire stations will maintain normal hours during the furlough order, as will state parks, the Romero Visitor’s Center at San Luis Reservoir, and One-Stop Career Centers. A complete list of offices open to the public on furlough Fridays is available on the state Department of Personnel Administration’s Web site: www.dpa.ca.gov.

The governor initially ordered the furlough of state workers earlier this year in an effort to save more than $1 billion. The two forced days off trimmed the average state worker’s salary by 9.2 percent. The additional furlough day brings the average wage reduction to approximately 14 percent. The move is expected to save the state $425 million this year.

Customers whose vehicle registration payments are due on one of the furlough Fridays may make their payment on the DMV’s next business day without penalty. Online services, such as vehicle registrations and license renewals, will continue as normal at www.dmv.ca.gov on the furlough Fridays.

Another option for San Benito County residents is to visit the local branch of the California Automobile Association, located at 351 Tres Pinos Road near the former Fortino’s Total Home. The branch offers AAA members the opportunity to renew their vehicle registration, transfer ownership of a vehicle, request duplicate registration, title or license plate stickers, and conduct license plate transactions.
