A traffic collision at the corner of Airline Highway and Union Road sent two senior citizens to the hospital Thursday.

Tom Berry, 80, whose residence is unknown, and Bob Angell, 75, of Hollister, both suffered injuries and were transported by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital, according to Hollister Fire Department Capt. Leo Alvarez.

Berry sustained injuries to his head and chest, and Angell to his chest, neck and back, according to Alvarez.

Their conditions were unknown as of press time. Federal law prohibits hospitals from releasing patients’ conditions without their written consent.

It occurred at 11:15 a.m. when Berry, driving a Chevy Caprice, collided from the rear into Angell’s Mazda MPV mini-van.

Angell’s van spun to the left and hit the front end of a semi-truck, which was turning right off Union Road onto Airline Highway. The truck driver out of Salinas, Christopher Smith, was not injured.

Alvarez said the cause of the accident had not been determined.

“All we know is the 80-year-old in the Caprice had low blood sugar, so that may have been a factor,” he said.

Northbound traffic on Airline Highway was diverted for about an hour.

In another three-car collision Wednesday evening on Highway 25, three Hollister residents sustained injuries that were not life threatening.

Hollister resident John Cardinalli, 39, was driving northbound on Highway 25 and rear-ended Nicasio Reza Guadarrama, 28, of Hollister, who was stopped with his left turn signal on, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

The impact sent Guadarrama’s Toyota Tercel into the southbound lane, directly into the path of Hollister resident John Andrews, who was unable to avoid a collision. Andrews, 78, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Hazel Hawkins Hospital.

Two passengers in Guadarrama’s vehicle received moderate injuries. Baltazal Valdez, 23, of Hollister, lost consciousness and was transported by Calstar to San Jose Medical Center.

Jose Luis Reza, 30, also of Hollister, suffered from head and neck pain and was transported to Hazel Hawkins.
