Martha Tobias has been named the 2015 Cattlewoman of the Year. The organization made the announcement and released the following information on Tobias:
Martha Tobias is at her core a cattlewoman. From the time that Quentin and Beverly returned to San Benito County and started raising beef cattle in 1965, their sixth child was at home on the ranch. Martha attended the local high school and then headed to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in recreation administration. She enjoyed participating in all of the horse department classes including starting a colt that was later used on the Tobias Ranch. After college Martha went to Yellowstone National Park for a summer job that would last 30 years. Fittingly, her first job was as a wrangler at the Roosevelt Lodge. In 2008 when Martha retired, she had spent the previous 15 years as the director of lodging responsible for the guest overnight accommodations throughout Yellowstone. As much as Martha had come to love the park, its incredible beauty and many lifelong friends, it was simply time to come home. Â
Early retirement afforded Martha the unique opportunity to spend time with her mother during her last years.  As she acclimated back to working full time on the ranch, connecting with family and community, the CattleWomen’s efforts to promote beef and the beef industry became ever more important to her. Like many California ranch families, Martha strives to keep the values and legacy of ranching alive and well. Â
I worked with Marty Tobias in Yellowstone National Park when she was just starting to work at the front desk of the Old Faithful Inn. I liked to call her Martha instead of Marty. She would call me Andrew instead of Andy. We would laugh – stupid, I know, but it is a fun memory. I remember her after all of these years. I think we only worked together for a month or two.
