Behind top performances from Jason Roascio, Vanessa Estrada, Darian Maroney and Krystal Alnas, the San Benito High track and field program not only defeated visiting Gilroy Thursday at the varsity level, but provided a program sweep by topping the Mustangs at the frosh/soph level as well.

The Baler varsity boys defeated Gilroy 100-36; the varsity girls did the same 95-36; the frosh/soph boys followed suit with a 89-14 victory; while the frosh/soph girls ensured a sweep with a 90-6 win.

Leading the way for the varsity boys was Roascio, who finished first in both the 200 meters and 400 meters, clocking hand times of 22.8 and 52.7, respectively.

The boys’ 4×100 relay team and 4×400 relay team also took first. The 4×100 recorded a 45.03 to earn the top spot, while the 4×400 did the same with a 3:48.

On the girls side, distance runner Vanessa Estrada took first in the 800 with a 2:28 and first in the 1,600 with a 5:26.

With San Benito sweeping both hurdles events 1-2-3, Darian Maroney took first in both when she recorded a 17.92 in the 100 hurdles and a 52.9 in the 300 hurdles.

Maroney took first in a third event as well, when she recorded a 29-11 in the triple jump.

In the throws, Krystal Alnas set a personal record in the discus with a 113-06, which not only placed her first on Thursday but also places her second overall in the Central Coast Section.

Meanwhile, both Tawne Haynish and Savanna Wilson scored in three different events for the Balers on Thursday. Haynish did it in the high jump, triple jump and 100 hurdles, while Wilson scored in the 100, 200 and long jump.

San Benito will be back in action on Saturday when it will compete in the Christopher “Garlic Classic” Track Invitational. The meet will be held at Giloy High’s Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

Field events are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., while track events will follow at 9 a.m.
