Two accidents occurred around 2:15 p.m. today that both spilled out debris – in one case, tires, and the other, garbage – onto the roadways.

One accident occurred on Cienega Road north of Union Road by San Benito High School when a garbage truck driver saw smoke coming from his truck and pulled into an empty lot to dump the garbage, a practice based on protocol rules for such drivers, Fire Chief Fred Cheshire said at the scene. After doing that, the driver started to put out the fire with an extinguisher before firefighters arrived, Cheshire said.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they sprayed down the truck and put out the fire completely, Cheshire said. There were no injuries.

Workers with Waste Management arrived shortly after to scoop up the mess.

The other accident occurred when a tractor trailer carrying tires on Cienega Road south of Union Road tipped over and spilled the load all over the road. When phoned this afternoon, a California Highway Patrol officer didn’t have any information on the accident, but said the office will have more Thursday morning.
