A bad go in the barrel racing on Monday morning at the California Gymkhana Association state finals won’t linger for very long for Bakersfield cowgirls Joeanne Allen and Annie Martin.
The two barrel racers clocked times they weren’t too pleased with on Monday, but with a total of 13 events scheduled at the state championships this week, Allen and Martin have plenty of time, and events, to make up the difference.
“I did horrible,” said Allen, 16, who added that her time in barrels was around the 26-second mark. “I dropped my rein and he just went in a different direction.
“I wish I could do it again. But that’s how it goes. We still have six more days to make up everything.”
The 2009 California Gymkhana Association State Championship Finals, which are taking place this week at Bolado Park in Tres Pinos, is currently showcasing hundreds of cowboys and cowgirls from all over the state, each of whom is competing in timed horse events like pole bending, figure 8 and birangle, among others.
On Tuesday, figure 8 stake, speed barrels and poles II will take place.
Natalie Martens, 17, also of Bakersfield, made her first trip to the state championships this year. On Monday, she recorded a time of 19.668 seconds to take third place in the AAA Horse 17-19 division.
“I’m happy with my time,” she said.
Although Annie Martin wasn’t too happy with her time in barrels on Monday, the 16-year-old cowgirl did, in fact, make up a little bit of the difference later in the day, albeit in a different event.
Recording a time of 16.016 seconds in the AA Horse 16-22 division, Martin rebounded from her disappointing time in barrel racing with a third-place finish in the figure 8 flags event.
Said Martin, “It’s easy to forget.”
