Motorists using Union Road will have to pay closer attention because a series of new traffic signals will be turned on in about two weeks.
San Benito County Public Works officials said they expect the recently installed traffic signals to be activated by Sept. 5.
“We are waiting for (Pacific Gas & Electric) to come in so we can energize the lines,” said Arman Nazemi, assistant public works director.
Once the lines are energized, technicians can test and make final adjustments to the equipment before turning the traffic signals on.
The new traffic lights are being installed at Airline Highway and Union; Southside and Union roads and San Benito Street and Union in an effort to reduce serious traffic collisions.
The lights at Southside and Union might be the last intersection to be activated, officials said. A pair of 14-year-olds, who were out joyriding, ran the stop sign at Southside and Union. The inexperienced drivers lost control of the car and struck the foundation for one of the poles used to hold the signal light.
“They damaged the foundation and that has to be repaired before we can install the poles at Southside,” said Doug Koenig, public works director.
PG&E crews recently raised the height on the poles, clearing the way for the signals being put to use.
