A 36-acre fire Saturday near Aromas was caused by vehicle exhaust, according to a Calfire spokesman.

The fire burned on the opposite side of the road from the Red Barn along Highway 101, near Cole Road, said Calfire spokesman Jonathan Pangburn.

Calfire reported it was a 36-acre fire and was fully contained in about four and a half hours, though it led to both lanes of Highway 101 being closed, from Cole Road to San Juan Road, for about an hour, he said. It caused a significant traffic backup but also threatened many structures in the area, while it did not damage any.

Crews responded from Calfire, the North Monterey County district, the Monterey County district and the Aromas Tri-County Fire Protection District, Pangburn said.
