Vertigo Coffee Roasters kicks off a new art series this Saturday in San Juan Bautista.

The cafe plans to feature a new artist every month, with shows taking place on the first Saturday of each month. The artist’s work will remain on display all month long.

Manager Ryan Morris said the cafe has always wanted to do something like an art series. Last year the cafe held several maker’s markets that featured local artists. But while last year’s events were combination art shows/parties, Morris said shows in the 2017 series will be more focused on the art itself.

Allison Garcia is the first artist in the series with her “Milky Way Romance” show. Garcia’s illustrations of aliens and outer space will be available for purchase in the form of original prints, pins and stickers.

“Honestly I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pen,” Garcia said of her art. “I never even questioned that that’s what I wanted to do. It’s everything to me. It’s my creative outlet. I enjoy drawing things other people can see because I think art helps people relate to each other.”

Saturday’s show won’t be the first time Vertigo Coffee customers have seen Garcia’s artwork. The Santa Cruz-based artist has her work featured on the cafe’s coffee bags, t-shirts, mugs and even the Vertigo Coffee logo.

Garcia said she’s honored to be chosen for the first show in the series.

“I do my own style, it’s fortunate they like it,” Garcia said.

Morris said Garcia already has a good following with the cafe’s customers.

“This will be a nice way to individually represent her work,” Morris said.

The art show takes place Saturday Jan. 7 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Vertigo Coffee Roasters at 81 Fourth Street in San Juan Bautista.
