Hollister – After more than two years covering police and courts as a Free Lance reporter, Erin Musgrave has been promoted to city editor and will begin coordinating the paper’s news coverage this week.

Publisher Steve Staloch said Musgrave, who has been working for the Free Lance since August of 2003, is a natural fit for the job.

“Erin is a people person and she’s developed an impressive network of story contacts in San Benito County,” Staloch said. “Her profound contributions to the Free Lance, journalistic integrity and passion for what she does make her an excellent choice for this important position.”

As city editor, Musgrave will coordinate the Free Lance’s news and photo coverage, edit articles and work closely with the community to ensure timely and accurate coverage.

“Erin is a strong addition to our editing team,” Editor Conan Knoll said Monday. “From her years as a reporter, she brings unparalleled knowledge of Hollister and the county to the job.”

After working as a journalist covering public safety for the Free Lance for two years, this move up the ladder will mark Musgrave’s first time working in a management position. She brings nearly five years of experience in the field to the city desk, and is not only excited about beginning a new chapter in her journalism career, but leading the newspaper’s hard-working reporters.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a reporter and cultivated many lasting relationships with people in the community as a result,” she said. “But now I get to try something new, which is a great opportunity.”

Musgrave said she is proud of the awards and accolades the Free Lance has received over the past year, and hopes to expand on the paper’s coverage of local news and events. Filling the paper with interesting, provocative news and photos is her main goal as city editor, she said.

Musgrave, who hails from Chico, received a bachelors degree in journalism from California State University, Chico in 2003 and is furthering her education in the field of mass communication at California State University, San Jose.

She replaces former city editor John Yewell who will continue writing weekly columns for the Free Lance while finishing a novel.
