San Benito County walkers and runners are called to lend a helping paw in the annual Pet Friends fundraiser next month.
The Hollister-based nonprofit takes pets from Hollister Animal Control and gives them a permanent space to live until they find a forever home, according to their website. Pet Friends also runs a weekly low-cost spay and neuter clinic, open on Thursdays, according to the organization’s website.
The Pet Friends’ Wag N Walk 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. for runners and 8:45 a.m. for pet lovers walking the route with canine or feline friends on Saturday June 11. Participants will travel paths at Graniterock, a sand and gravel quarry located at 5632 Airline Highway, outside Hollister.
Cats and dogs are invited to meander the 5K route with their owners, if they’re on leashes. Furry companion must show proof of a rabies vaccination before they can participate.
All proceeds benefit the nonprofit. Community members wishing to help pets can also bring donations of Kirkland dog or cat food from Costco, Arm & Hammer cat litter and KMR kitten formula on race day.
Following the 5K, Graniterock will hold an open house with drinks, hot dogs and a tour.
Participants can register online until June 8, by going here. Pet lovers can also register the day of the event between 7:15 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. at the quarry. For more information about Pet Friends, go to the group’s website, petfriends.org.
