Editor,
As a participant in the walk-out, I believe that we needed more organization. The protest was going to take place during school hours with the intention of it affecting the government, since we are said to “cost $50” for every school day that we miss. This fact made the protest a bit more complicated for the students.
Not all of us can afford to get out of class and be punished for doing so by serving hours in detention, receiving misconducts, or anything of that sort. I do believe that there were some students that actually knew what they were doing and why they were doing so. On the other hand there were too many students that joined the walk-out in order to just get out of class. As a result, this weakened the whole idea of the protest.
As many other students and faculty members believe, we should have organized the protest at another point in time, such as after school or during the weekend. By doing this, we then would prove to our community that we were being serious, really opposed to HR 4437, and that this did affect different people, not just students.
Above all, the walk-out did bring some attention to the immigration issue, but maybe not the type of attention that was sought.
