‘Tis the season for games to be cancelled. The rain was coming down heavy early Wednesday morning. As a result of the recent storm, the Baler boys soccer team had two home games this week canceled.

The game against Alisal is scheduled to be made up Tuesday. And the game against Alvarez hasn’t been rescheduled yet.

The girls soccer team had to move its scheduled game Friday against Soquel on the stadium under the lights to the regular soccer fields.

Now the game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

“We’d like to get that game in if possible,” said Athletic Director Randy Logue. “We don’t want to put the kids at risk or do irreparable damage to the fields though.”

If it doesn’t rain too much before the game, Logue said the fields should be ready to go by Friday.

There is still no indication when the stadium field will be able to be played on again.

“We have to balance the desire to play on it with the feasibility of doing so,” Logue said. “It is a long season ahead of us, and several teams use the fields. We could selfishly go out and play on them, but then no one could play on them.”

But the rain hasn’t stopped the basketball and wrestling teams from putting up some impressive numbers in the early season.

The wrestling team looked good in the dual meet against Bellarmine on Tuesday. Anytime you can beat a team like Bellarmine, it is always a sign of good things to come.

The team stopped practice early Wednesday so athletes could attend P.J. Galvan’s funeral.

I had a chance to talk to Galvan’s former childhood neighbor Jeff Eisenman, a friend of mine who now lives in San Jose.

Eisenman, like most people in the community, was shocked at the news of his passing away and the tragic circumstances behind the two deaths in the accident Saturday night.

Continuing on to more pleasant things…

The girls basketball team is 3-1 after a loss to upstart King City, and the boys team is also 3-1 and will be looking to defend last year’s title in the Independence Tournament this week.

The San Benito winter sports parent meeting will be Dec.15 at 7 p.m in the auditorium.

The school is also still looking for a boys swim coach for this spring as the season quickly approaches. Anyone interested should call Athletic Director Randy Logue at 637-5831 ext. 350.

The Gavilan Rams will be playing their first home game of the year tonight against Skyline College. Come on out to see some exciting basketball.

The only place you might find any other high-scoring good quality basketball is in San Jose for the Balers’ tournament. And besides, Gilroy is closer.

Although they didn’t have the best of years last season, the Rams were always fun to watch. Coach Chris Shoemaker knows how to get his team to compete.

Tommy Sondgroth, a former Baler, and Erik Nelson, a Gilroy High alum, can hustle up and down the court and hit the key shots when needed.

The Gavilan women’s team, which is loaded with local talent, returns home Jan. 7 against Cabrillo.

Most of the team feels right at home with Gavilan’s red jersies. Nicole Donley, the only sophomore on the team, is one of five former Balers on the team.

As always, I would love to hear from you with any comments, suggestions, story ideas or critisms.
