Editor,
Schools, schools, schools, that’s all you hear on TV, radio and newspapers: No contracts, too many students in classes, too many periods, combine the high school and Hollister districts, we need a junior high, a school that caters to superior students, there is a lack of supplies.
Who is responsible for our problems? First parents should teach respect to their children – this is not the teachers job. We have some very dedicated teachers but there are those who are in it just for the paycheck. Class size wouldn’t be a problem if these two things were corrected. Supplies should be the families’ responsibility; this would curb waste. Also, mothers’ clubs could help with this by raising money. Room mothers could also help.
Administrators could be a big help. Trustees should run schools as a business, not a popularity contest. Schools should be run like a business? If you don’t have money, you don’t spend it. That is the same thing families do when they live on a budget. Before labor unions, teachers worked hard to keep their jobs; jobs were hard to find and teachers were plentiful. I think good teachers should be rewarded, others should be let go. A longer school day would allow for periods of time for students to do homework at school where teachers’ help is available. This might help with test scores. I think the solution to our problems are tw- fold: Both parents and schools should work together instead of hiring professionals to come and prepare students to be able to achieve high scores.
All this should be the school’s responsibility. Think of all the money they could save. Also, there wouldn’t be the worry of the state taking over – think of all the money they would save. It could even help with books.
Education is very important, so instead of complaining, make a few important changes.
