Editor,
In regards to your article “priced out of their hometown” (Free Lance, April 2-4), I am really amazed at the prices all over California. I recently retired from the U.S. military, came back to Hollister where I grew up and did some interviews in the San Jose area. Of course, while I was home, I had the opportunity to look at houses and could not believe what people were paying for the old and dilapidated homes. It was really disgusting. It was very sad for me, for I wanted to be near my sisters and mother.
Fortunately I already owned a home in Washington state, and was able to purchase a home near my last military assignment in Hopewell, Va. I retired in 1996 and built my new home that year on seven acres of land with woods and clear land for approximately $160,000. It’s a two-story building with approximately 3,300 square feet, and there are jobs here as well. Amazing, isn’t it?
Anyway, the East Coast is wide open with opportunity for those who wish to work and be good producers in strong communities. I often run across “Calis,” as we call them here, moving in from California, being forced away by the prices of homes in the Central California region. Come to Virginia. Virginia is for lovers, as is our motto,
Good hunting, we love it here now.
