Campbell – The Hollister American 10-11 All-Stars rebounded from a previous loss on Friday, upending Alum Rock 7-1 at the Section 5 All-Star Tournament in Campbell.
The win evens American’s record in the double-elimination tournament at 1-1, after a 12-4 loss to Saratoga on Thursday placed the local All-Stars into the losers bracket.
On Friday, though, American went to work early, banging out 13 hits total, and eliminating Alum Rock from the section tourney.
Starter Marco Cosio threw a complete game, scattered six hits and allowed one earned run in the fourth inning. Through six innings of work, Cosio struck out nine batters.
At the plate in the first inning, American got all the scoring it would need when they plated four runs.
Russell Tobias led off with a single, and Dylan Yamasaki moved him over with a base on balls. With two on, Marcos Perez got three of his five RBIs on the day when he homered off Alum Rock, and put American up 3-0.
Later in the same inning, Tony Diaz singled and advanced on a pass ball when Jordan Lopes hit an RBI single to put American up 4-0.
In the fourth inning, Cosio, Cody Cameron, and Yamasaki got on to load the bases, and Perez hit a two-RBI double. Diaz would then follow with an RBI single of his own, bringing the score to 7-1.
Perez’ five-RBI day followed a 3-for-3 effort in American’s first game on Thursday against Saratoga. While Yamasaki and Cosio each hit solo home runs in the first and third inning, respectively, Saratoga’s bats were too much.
The District 12 Saratoga team had 17 hits in that game, including three home runs.
“They just hit the ball,” Manager Al Lopes said. “They were a good team.”
While first-game jitters may have come into play on Thursday, Lopes said his team’s play from Thursday to Friday was “night and day.”
Today, Hollister American will play Briarwood (Santa Clara) at 2pm at Campbell Little League, field one.
“It’ll be just like playing us,” Lopes said of his team’s similarities with Briarwood. “They’re a tough team. But I’m proud of the kids. They’re playing hard and we’re battling.”
Note: The Hollister National 9-10 team received a bye in the first round on Friday of the Section 5 All-Star Tournament in Hollister.
The local squad will play today against Santa Clara Westside after Santa Clara Westside defeated North Valley 6-0.
The game is scheduled for Veterans Memorial Park at 7pm.
