The Adult Literacy Program of San Benito County is organizing a 10-kilometer run in San Juan Bautista for June 14, and organizers are soliciting sponsorships and runner entries, which will cost $25.

Proceeds for the run, along with another 5-k run and 5-k walk the same day, will go toward funding the program’s budget.

Program Coordinator Barbara Scott said not only is the Adult Literacy Program expanding its services and its $62,000 budget, but funding from a state grant will decrease by 25 percent next year.

“Ultimately, they (the state) want you to be self-supporting,” Scott said.

The Adult Literacy Program serves to improve adults’ reading, speaking, writing and math skills. It also offers one-on-one tutoring to anyone trying to improve their reading skills. Tutors and learners meet one hour per week.

An estimated 28 percent of San Benito County residents cannot read, according to Scott, who thought of the idea for a run.

Scott hopes to get runners from as far as Monterey, Santa Cruz and even San Jose. Runners can register on the Internet at www.schedule.com.

Scott said she hopes the sponsorship proceeds will pay for costs of putting on the run. Entry fees would then go directly to the program, she said.
