With only six players making the trip to East Palo Alto Academy, the short-handed Hawks fell 46-36 to East Palo Alto on Monday.
The loss sends the Hawks to a 4-11 overall record, going into the team’s third league game against York on Thursday. The Hawks are 2-0 in league play so far this year.
In Monday’s game, the Hawks stayed close to East Palo Alto despite being at a size disadvantage, head coach Sam Stewart said.
“They were a lot bigger than us,” he said. “They didn’t think we had a chance but once we started to score some points, the girls started to believe.”
Throughout most of the game, the Hawks stayed within striking distance of Palo Alto.
Freshman Leslie Martinez led the Hawks with 15 points. Gabriela Medina added nine points, and Lynette Weckerle scored eight points in the loss.
The Hawks host York at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
