The Hollister Viking Junior Midget team was focused and ready its game with Brentwood on a blustery fall day Sunday.
The Vikings, who were trying to improve their 3-1 record, won 22-16 over their central valley foe.
Neither team scored, though, until the second quarter when Hollister’s defense forced Brentwood gave the Vikings good field position. Quarterback Diego Fisher followed with a quick drive to give Hollister the lead. From the Viking 43-yard line, Fisher launched a 15-yard pass into the waiting arms of Tristan Wahl, who secured the ball to the Brentwood 43-yard line. Runner Andres Soto took the next hand-off, with blocks by Matthew Manley and Michael Zaragoza, and advanced to the 10-yard line.
On the next play, Fisher scored when after he was forced to scramble. Following a solid block by Adam Mendoza, Fisher step easily into the end zone for the first score. After a missed point after, Hollister led the contest 6-0.
Hollister’s defense, with heavy-hitting tacklers Devin Beltran, Michael Camacho, Kyle Manley and Cade Neece, shut down Brentwood. Wahl gave Hollister another chance, when he intercepted a pass. Two plays later Hollister was back in the end zone.
Following a big catch by Soto caught, Fisher, who was given excellent blocking by Neece, Kyle Manley and Kane DeAlba, found Wahl in the end zone to extend the Hollister lead to 14-0.
Brentwood came back after the half ready to strike back, scoring on its first possession of the second half.
With the score 14-8, on the next defensive stand Clint Fuentes and Matthew Manley berated the quarterback and forced incomplete passes. Abram Pasillas tackled a runner at the line of scrimmage and Beltran sealed a gap and tackled the ball carrier to take possession back. On the ensuing Brentwood punt, Matthew Manley blocked the kick and Zaragoza recovered to give the Vikings great field position.
On the next play, Fisher scrambled for 20 yards and scored another touchdown to extend the Viking lead. Soto’s extra point gave Hollister a 22-8 lead in the third quarter. Brentwood scored once more in the fourth quarter, but Hollister held on to earn the 22-16 victory.
