Gavilan College won its first ever outright Coast Conference championship after defeating Chabot 25-19, 28-26, 25-21 Tuesday in the final regular season game. They shared the title in 2009 with Cabrillo. Gavilan (18-8) also finished with their most ever wins.
The Rams knew coming in that they at least had a share of the title. But Gavilan wasn’t in a sharing mood.
“It was absolutely huge for us,” said coach Kevin Kramer. “We have had some strong support from our alumni. The girls wanted to get it done. It was a great environment and loud in the gym.”
The Rams were led by Sarina Gerard (27 assists, 11 digs), Kaycee (9 kills, 12 kills, 2 aces), Andreinna Castaneda (8 kills, 3 blocks) and Kayondra Hood (15 digs). Vanessa Wilkins had all six of her kills in the first game.
Gavilan, who has qualified for the Northern California Regional playoffs for four consecutive years, will open up play on Tuesday.
They will find out who they play after the 10 a.m. Sunday meeting. The Rams have a good chance of hosting the game, Kramer said.
“The nice thing about volleyball is that you can still work on your game,” Kramer said. “We need to continue to work on defense. We are pretty dynamic offensively. But I am feeling good where we are at. We just need to continue to maintain our focus.”
