Manuel and Peggy Bettencourt, of Paicines, and John and Inge Tonder, of Cupertino, are proud to announce their eldest granddaughter, Lizzy Raye Tonder, as Hollister’s S.D.E.S Holy Ghost Portuguese Queen for 2011-2012. This honor makes Lizzy a fourth-generation Queen.
Lizzy, the eldest daughter of Vickie Bettencourt Robles, of Gilroy, and Glen Tonder, of Hollister, precedes her mother as S.D.E.S Hollister Queen 88-89, aunt Shelley Bettencourt S.D.E.S. Hollister Queen 91-92, and great-aunt Mary Bettencourt Cavanaugh I.F.D.E.S Gilroy Queen 66-67, and great, great-aunt Angelina Bettencourt, Gilroy I.F.D.E.S. Gilroy 27-28.
The Queen’s court includes Avrie Hubbell, of Tres Pinos, daughter of Beth Zgragen and Jake Hubbell and Rosaelia Coreas, of Gilroy, niece of Teresa and Jaime Nunez
The Hollister Portuguese Festa Celebration starts Saturday with a dance at 9 p.m. followed by Presentation of the New Queen and her court including exchange of the crown at 10 p.m. Hollister’s S.D.E.S. Hall is located at 695 Seventh St. The parade is the following day, Sunday, at 10 a.m. proceeding up Seventh Street to Monterey Street and down Sixth Street to Sacred Heart Church for 11:30 a.m. Mass. The parade features Portuguese queens and flags from other cities throughout the region, a Portuguese band, and the aspects of a traditional Portuguese Festa.
