The City of Hollister had crews out July 26 at Fairview Road, between Sunnyslope and Hillcrest roads, clearing the right of way along soundwalls.
Marcelo Orta, the parks division supervisor, said that crews will be working to clear brush and clean up the routes used for school children.
“We are trying to clean up areas where the traffic is heavy,” he said, noting that work is scheduled near Ladd Lane and on Union Road, near Cerra Vista School.
“It’s all the avenues that kids use to go to school,” Orta said.
Orta said the work is part of the parks division’s regular duties but they have been behind on it and on soundwall cleanup. The staff has been helped with some seasonal employees who are paid by the One-Stop Career Center and state funds.
“These kids are basically here to help,” he said. “If they are under 18, they can’t handle equipment, but they sweep and load.”
The One-Stop employees will continue to work with the city until the week before school starts.
“We are putting them to use,” Orta said. “We try to give the kids some experience…We have them help in just about every aspect of maintenance and parks duties. I want them to say ‘I learned something.'”
