California Women for Agriculture’s Salinas Valley Chapter (Salinas CWA) awarded $21,000 in scholarships to 20 scholarship recipients during an awards ceremony on June 29 at D’Arrigo Bros. Co., in Salinas for the 2011-2012 school year.

“The young women who receive our scholarships are chosen because they have demonstrated themselves to be outstanding participants in both their school and in their community. Each has great potential to become future agriculture and community leaders,” said Sue Storm, co-president Salinas CWA. “Thanks to the generous donations of local businesses, including Dole, Driscoll’s and Valley Pride, Salinas CWA awarded a record-breaking number and amount in scholarships this year, up from $11,000 in scholarships to 14 scholarship recipients in 2010.”

Awarded annually, Salinas CWA offers two scholarship programs: Women Pursuing Degrees in Agriculture Scholarship and The Farm Workers Scholarship. The Women Pursuing Degrees in Agriculture Scholarship is intended for female students interested in embarking on a career in an ag-related field. The Farm Workers Scholarship is available to women who have at least one parent or guardian employed as a farm worker.

Both scholarships go to women pursuing a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree from a junior college, a master’s or doctorate degree, or a degree from an accredited trade school. Recipients are required to have a 3.0 grade point average and must be residents of or attended high school in Monterey, Santa Cruz, or San Benito counties.
