Hollister firefighters will wear special pink T-shirts on duty for a week in October to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness month and to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
The union, representing 21 local firefighters, is hoping that local residents will join them in the effort, which is dubbed “Go pink for a week,” by purchasing and wearing a pink shirt that says “Hollister Fire” on the back and has the department’s logo on the front.
After initially posing the idea to union membership two years ago, firefighter and union executive board member Norman “Rico” Fisher brought it up again this year.
“I let the union body know that we all have mothers, daughters, sisters, wives, nieces and aunts that could be affected by this,” he said.
So the union decided to become team members with the “Passionately Pink for the Cure” program and sell shirts for $20 for sizes small through extra large and $25 for double- or triple-XL.
“We get requests all the time to purchase our blue duty shirts, but we can’t sell them,” Fisher said. “But now people can purchase the pink duty shirt to show solidarity in our community for a cure.”
Chief Fred Cheshire will allow the firefighters to wear the pink T-shirts on duty during the week of Oct. 9-15 and Fisher said he hopes others will join in the effort. Departments throughout the United States and Canada are participating.
Fisher said that even if locals prefer not to buy one of the special Hollister Fire pink shirts, they can wear a pink shirt of their own that week and donate at least $1 to the Komen foundation.
“It would be amazing to see a population of nearly 40,000 donate at least a dollar,” he said.
The union will not solicit donations for the effort door-to-door or by phone. Rather, it will sell the pink shirts at the downtown Farmers Market each Wednesday through Sept. 28 and is taking orders at the temporary fire station located behind the Briggs Building parking structure and at Papa Murphy’s Pizza and Intero Real Estate.

For every $20 T-shirt that is sold, $10 will go to the Komen foundation. From the $25 shirts, $12 will be donated.
