Making peace is best way to honor veterans
I am puzzled by this coming event. Puzzled because I am
wondering exactly just what is the connection between dove release
and 9/11? I think a good topic for the next VFW sponsored contest
would be,
”
What does the dove release and the 9/11 mean to you?
”
Doves are universally recognized as the sign of peace. Who does
this peace represent and what does it mean? Is it for the innocent
people killed on that day? May they rest in peace? Is it for the
soldiers killed in the wars?

The best way to honor veterans is to make peace. Is it for the innocents killed in Iraq and Afghanistan? Are we peaceful about that? Is it offering peace to the insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan? Will our military leave? Is the release of these white doves by veterans a signal to the president? Does it mean true peacemaking work for President Obama, who received the 2009 Nobel Peace prize?
Do veterans want to bring our troops home and end the wars? After all Lincoln did say that the best way to dispose of our enemies is to turn them into friends. Or is it this question, which I hate to ask? Is the release of doves on 9/11 just another empty gesture?
