Fatal wreck

A 19-year-old San Jose man died Sunday night in a single-car wreck on Ferguson Road in Gilroy, according to the CHP.

The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Hollister resident Jose Romero, suffered major injuries and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, CHP Officer Jamie Rios said.

In rainy conditions just before 10 p.m., the 2004 Toyota vehicle drove off the roadway, collided with a dirt embankment and overturned, Rios said.

The passenger, identified Wednesday as Mauricio Romero by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jose Romero was flown to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where he was arrested because he “was found to be under the influence of an alcoholic beverage at the time of the collision,” according to a CHP incident report.
