Hollister School District trustees recognized parent volunteers who participated in the Los Dichos de la Casa program with roses at a recent meeting.
Parents received flowers and certificates to represent the district’s gratitude for their participation in a new program that has adults reading in Spanish and English to elementary school children. Trustee Elsa Rodriguez was absent.
Monica Rivera, a Los Dichos participant, had always wanted to volunteer but told a packed board room on May 24 that she didn’t have time when she was working. Now, as a grandmother, she is reading as part of the program.
“Now I’m doing something I love,” she said. “It is one of the best things that I’ve done ever.”
Each month, volunteers in the program read specially selected bilingual picture books, then led discussions and activities about topics related to Latino culture. The program promotes literacy and parent involvement at Calaveras and R.O. Hardin School, campuses with high percentages of students learning English as a second language.
