A 3.8-magnitude earthquake shook the South Bay at 11:48 a.m. this morning, coming on the heels of a 4.2-magnitude temblor Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey.
Today’s quake hit about 6 miles northeast of Milpitas at a depth of about 5 miles. This was also the approximate location and depth of Thursday’s larger temblor and four smaller quakes.
A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck 6 miles northeast of Milpitas at 10:09 a.m. Thursday, sending small ripples down through South County.
The epicenter of the temblor was located about 11 miles northeast of San Jose City Hall, according to the USGS. The earthquake occurred about 5.5 miles underground.
There was no immediate damage reported from the quake, according to the Gilroy emergency communications center.
Residents reported having felt the quake as far north as Santa Rosa and as far south as Carmel, according to the USGS. As of 11 a.m., 27 people from Gilroy had reported the quake, with the majority classifying the event as “weak.”
The quake was followed by a small, 2.2-magnitude temblor at 10:36 a.m. and a 2.3-magnitude quake at 10:54 a.m., both in about the same place, according to the USGS. Those quakes were shallower, at only about 4 miles underground.
There was also a 2.8-magnitude quake at 11:09 p.m. Wednesday about 9 miles northeast of San Jose City Hall, according to the USGS. That quake occurred about 5 miles underground.
