San Benito County Planning Director Art Henriques last week announced his resignation, to take effect at the end of April.
Henriques started as planning director in January 2006 and replaced former office head Rob Mendiola. Henriques on Monday told the Free Lance he was ready to retire after spending 30 years in local government.
“In busy local government, there’s never a good time to retire,” he said. “This seemed as good a time as any.”
Henriques said he informed the county administrative officer that he plans to “work as hard as ever” in the next three months to “give them time to figure out what they want to do.”
Board Chairman Reb Monaco said the recruitment to fill Henriques’ position hasn’t been discussed much – he expects supervisors to be actively involved – but those talks might start at Tuesday’s meeting.
During Henriques’ time with the county, planners considered an array of projects or law changes that gathered widespread attention, such as DMB’s El Rancho San Benito development proposal and the recently hashed over growth cap.
