Groundhog’s Day! Sounds like Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow so it
looks like we’re in for another six weeks of winter. As long as
that includes a lot of rain, we’re good with that down here in
South County. We may actually get to normal or even above normal
rainfall this year for a change.

The Pura Family still celebrates Groundhog Day as they sent out Happy Groundhog’s Day cards this year. Great pictures of the girls, Brett and Emery. Speaking of Brett, birthday wishes go out to her as she celebrated her 4th birthday over the weekend with lots of family and friends. A snow machine was brought in and a sledding ramp was built so in pre-Olympic fashion, the kids were able to have a sledding competition. “Olympic” medals were given to the winners of each age group. The kids had a great time and Brett had a great birthday party. Some of those on hand to celebrate with Brett included cousins Tel and Megan Jones and Meryl and Marley Eggleston, Mitch and Kristy Bourdet and their family, Ben and Jamie Reid and their daughter, Todd and Brody Sans, Kyla Prunty and Brett Bonfantini and Barbara Hearne, just to name a few.
Many South County and Hollister residents spent last weekend in King City participating in the Salinas Valley Fair Barrel Race. It was a very successful, three-day event that was held in the indoor arena, a great place to be Friday night while it was pouring down rain outside! There were more than 350 runs made and more than $16,000 in prize money awarded. Contestants traveled from as far south as Los Angeles and Arizona to as far north as Oregon. Some of those enjoying the weekend from South County included: Cynthia Fancher, Betty Sans, Melissa Perry, Concetta Gardner, Jenae Mathis, Lisa Mancebo, Colleen Sabin, Janel Flook, Cheyenne Rey, Colleen Sabin and Nicole Nelson, just to name a few. Many thanks to Nicole Nelson and Vickie Sabin on the great office help they provided all weekend long. The next barrel race hosted by the SVF is scheduled for March 19-21.
Nicole Nelson will be hosting a barrel race and ranch sorting competition at the SVF fairgrounds on February 20 -21. The sorting is sanctioned by a national ranch sorting association that is making its way into California and all events are run with two-man teams. There are levels of competition for all riders and anyone is welcome to participate. Contact Nicole Nelson for more information on that event.
