The Electric car and the environment

An important concept in physics is the Principle of Conservation of Energy which states “Energy cannot be created or destroyed, although it can be changed from one form to another.”

So how does this relate to the electric powered car and the environment? Note the statement energy can be “changed from one form to another”. Consider the following: A gasoline engine consumes energy from oil. An electric powered car consumes energy from electric power plants which have to produce this energy from something like oil, coal, nuclear plants, etc. Then there’s the energy required manufacturing batteries, and the toxic waste generated when they are discarded.

So the electric car may not be a solution to significantly reducing emissions to the atmosphere or significantly reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

Sheriff represents well

Most small town sheriffs when interviewed by the national press come across as either hicks, or worse, rednecks. San Benito County’s Sheriff Curtis Hill when thrust upon the national stage has comported himself as neither.

Sheriff Hill represented Hollister and San Benito County to the nation, if not the wold, as an intelligent law enforcement officer who understands the difference between a criminal act and a mental health breakdown.

If Hollister and San Benito give out Man of the Year awards, the easy choice this year would be Sheriff Curtis Hill.

When I wrote a weekly column for the Pinnacle, I often chided the sheriff for his political stands, but for his humanity and as the chief law enforcement officer representing Hollister and San Benito County to the nation, I offer nothing but the highest praise.
